We are now living in a time of fantastic technological advancements within the visual technology fields. Photo camera models renew themselves every year with all the promise of more mega-pixels and extra features. Yet, whenever we contemplate it if you’ll, the photo that comes beyond each of our old digital cameras normally has strengths and weaknesses that persist through every one of the successive appliances experience our hands.
Digital camera models along with general all photographic cameras are, despite all the marketing buzz, still not a lot of machines. For example, they register our society with sensors that can only capture a small fraction of the tonal range which our eyes can perceive.
Imagine your self a sunny day looking at an attractive landscape. Below you, around the feet, you can observe the rich lush green vegetation; above you, the brilliant blue skies. Once we contemplate this scene, our eyes can perceive its richness, the important points in both the shadows and the bright clouds above. The dynamic range that the eyes can process, which works through the darkest towards the brightest areas, is enough to contain almost all of the rich detail because scene.
Now take the photo camera and snap a trial from the position including both vegetation and the sky. The result is very telling. With regards to the parameters that either your camera otherwise you choose, some detail from the scene will be gone from your result. Either elements of the vegetation will blend to black and lose all detail or areas of heaven will blend to white and lose all detail.
To conclude, the retina of the camera, its digital sensor, which captures the lighting in the scene, is just not effective at dealing with a tonal range as large as our eyes can. It may only capture the complete detail in a small range which can be positioned at different numbers of brightness through the camera itself or us. Because of that, within a scene like the one described above which has a large contrast, it eventually ends up capturing the detail limited to the highlights and mid-tones, or mainly on the mid-tones, or mainly at the shadows and mid-tones. It cannot capture simultaneously the full detail from the scene from the darkest on the brightest areas.
This can be obviously a simplification associated with an scenario we could describe in much more detail. But the conclusion remains the same. Once we consider the final photo, we understand that what we remember seeing with the eyes is not just what the photo shows. That richness of detail everywhere is gone. And this is one amongst suffers from limitations that most Photo cameras share. We might pursue to describe many more associated with color precision along with other locations cameras cannot handle the depth and richness of the world around us.
